Jnane Rumi, Morocco

A luxury cultural residence in Marrakech, with a creative soul

In the coveted Triangle d’Or quarter of the La Palmerie district, and only a five-minute drive from the excitement of the Medina, Jnane Rumi is a luxury getaway with a heart – and an embodiment of Marrakech’s creative revival. The cultural residence offers 11 en-suite bedrooms in total, split between the main house, three garden pavilions and a private annex with its own pool, plus a full-length swimming pool. Available to both individual guests and as an exclusive rental, the house is named for its idyllic garden (‘jnane’ in Arabic), with ‘Rumi’ nodding to the Sufi master, but also the Arabic for ‘Roman’, in an echo of the venue’s European ownership. Like Marrakech itself, Jnane Rumi is situated at the crossroads between East and West – a gateway to exploring the cultural crucible that is the city.

Dutch art lawyer and cultural entrepreneur Gert-Jan van den Bergh and his wife Corinne first fell in love with the property’s Zen gardens, studded with over 150 century-old palm, olive and pistachio trees. Standout architectural details include a bathroom featuring a nine-metre-high domed ceiling. Jnane Rumi also houses a hi-tech kitchen, hammam and massage room. Celebrated Dutch chef Karin Gaasterland – whose most recent residency was at Marrakech icon Riad El Fenn – is creative chef at Jnane Rumi, overseeing the Moroccan-meets-modern-French cuisine and a culinary events programme.

Jnane Rumi’s passion for contemporary North African art plays out throughout the house, where Marrakech-based painter and sculptor and appointed creative consultant of the property, Samy Snoussi, has curated an array of works by emerging and established artists. The artwork on display at Jnane Rumi will be on rotation and accessible for both guests and non-staying guests to view, as part of a curated cultural programme that will run throughout the year.
